Display Status:
New C9’s and Strobes have arrived: Our order of 150 C9 LED’s retrofit bulbs and another 24 strobes arrived from Action Lighting. I must say, at first I was not too impressed with the C9’s, but once I setup a test strip, I was impressed with the colors. I have yet to test them on a controller yet, but the specs do say they are dimmable and will do what we need. One nice feature with any LED bulb is the power consumption; each C9 LED will only consume ¼ watt (37-Watts total display) versus 10-watts for each incandescent bulb (1,500-watts total display), giving us a savings of 1,463 watts, that’s like turning off 37 40 watt light bulbs…..I’m impressed!
We ordered 90 new power cords for all the new controllers. We saved quite a bit of money on the cords from Mono Price, but the cords were not stripped or tinned, and we had to strip and tin 270 wires, then install quick connects……what a tedious project, but that is done, and now behind us now.
Little League:
18 games in, and we are still in first place, with one loss.
What a season so far! The Quartz Hill Little League Major Dodgers just keep going and going. We finally faced off again with the Major Rays; whom we were tied with at one time, news of their key pitcher had fingertip issues (blisters) gave us added hope for a win, we knew we could take them with or without their key pitcher. I have coached long enough (15 Years) to know that one player does not carry a team, and I have learned that one pitcher is not strong enough to pitch every game in an entire season; they just break down about mid-season. Unfortunately, the way the pitching rules are written; if a pitcher keeps his pitch count down each game, he can pitch every game. Unfortunately, this rule does not help develop other potential pitchers on the team, and actually harms the pitcher in question in the long-run, I have seen many young men over the years; pushed by their fathers, only to quit out of frustration, or get permanently injured from over working and poor mechanics.
Anyway, we faced-off with the Rays (Dead tie for first), and yes, we saw their key pitcher, but we were ready for him, remember, you can teach anybody to be a fastball hitter, it’s hitting the junk pitches that are hard to teach a batter, but the boys practiced hard over several days and we lit up the Rays pitcher pushing us one game up to take first place. We took four runs from their pitcher, and only gave one in return, dominance from the start of the game.
Since that game, the Rays tied with another team, putting them back another ½ game in the standings, and making our position much stronger. We see the Rays one more time, which I am not worried about, but it is the other teams we need to be cautious about; We have told the kids that they are now the bulls-eye for every other team, there is no greater pleasure in Baseball than beating a first place team, and we are the target! Now is the time to focus, to have purpose, and to get better at this sport.
Our team batting average is still in the high .475 after 16 games, with 21 home runs by seven of our twelve-man roster. We have a team on-base average of 59%, and a whopping 125 RBI’s. Our runs ‘For’ verses runs ‘Against’ is a staggering 167 to 39.
Nate:
I have been catching for my 18 Year-old in the bull-pin this season to keep him honed, and he is just beating the heck out of this old man. Catching an 83 mile-an-hour fastball really makes you think about your skills as a catcher, but it is all for the good of both of us, we are both working out and getting better. It will be nice to see him play again this summer.
High School Graduation is just weeks away, we are waiting with great anticipation, getting the pool ready, cleaning the backyard, and tuning up the margarita blender, so that Laura and I can celebrate that another child is through the system, and one left to go.
Household Projects (Honey-Do’s):
1) Pool Pump manifold rebuild.
2) Hedge Front and back shrubbery (we have a LOT of bushes, over 40 in the front alone, and the backyard is 10-fold).
3) Fix A/C compressor fan.
4) Replace pool chlorinator.
5) Fix upstairs heater igniter.
6) Something is wrong with the lawn sprinklers, very low pressure, and must checkout.
7) Make and replace patio furniture swags.
8) Put my LT500R top-end back together, and get ready to ride.
9) Fix upper pond waterfall cracks.
10) Strip, stain, and varnish front doors.

Little League: what a start! We actually started out season at the end of February, but due to the nature of this blog and how it is written, it’s always one month behind. Our first game with the mighty Major Dodgers got off to a great start, although we thought we weren’t going to play due to the rain, we did eventually get the game going. We knew we had a weaker team, so we soften up our defenses and let the younger players occupy the infield, while our older players visited the outfield or reacquainted themselves with the bench. It does not really matter what we do, our team is so strong, and they perform wherever you play them.
We have played nine games up to Easter weekend and currently we are tied for first with one loss. Our team batting average is an awesome 498 with our top hitter batting 709, after 9 games we have hit 10 home runs with five of our batters while another two continue to bounce off the fence, This is nothing but a solid team with solid players. I could not ask for a better team! Bubba incidentally is hitting 609 after 23 official at-bats.
We have not done anything with the seven-foot trees yet, I am displeased with the manufactures design of removable branches. We have discussed this at length, and it will be one of those let try something and see projects.
We received our new controllers from Light-O-Rama from the Fall Sale, a new CTB16PC Kit, and a CMB16DC controller, pushing us to 160 channels of control. Having all the controllers will allow me to distribute my power needs more evenly amongst the controllers, dropping the amperage load considerably on all controllers and get the controllers closer to the elements.
The DC controller we purchased specifically for the Blizzard and Rainbow wash LED lights. I am hoping I can gather enough funds to purchase enough Rainbow Wash lights to replace all our flood lights, which is approximately 40 – 150 Watt lights, giving us back over 50 amps of available power, but at $20.00 each, this will be quite an investment, so we will have to see what happens with this element.
We have decided to purchase a new FM transmitter; our old Belkin has LCD screen finally died after 4 years of service, not a bad investment for $30.00. We have chosen the EDM LCD RDS transmitter that is manufactured in South Africa; this has nothing but great reviews and meets the FCC part 15 compliance regulations for home FM broadcast. The EDM LCD RDS clarity is unparallel to other transmitters, and will allow us to broadcast the song titles and artist names directly to the listener’s car stereo. This was quite an investment, but it does play a very important part to our display, without it, it’s just lights.
We started building our four - seven channel arches, two have been built and one is in the works. We planned to do one per week, but we only built two in three weeks. We should have the third built this weekend and the final one at least started.
Bubba and I have decided that we would build a unique twenty-foot tree for this coming year, it so happens that our neighbor decided to cut down a twenty-foot pine tree just at the corner of our property, this will be a perfect location for our twenty-foot flag pole tree, this corner is high terraced and viewable from the main street and will serve as a beacon to our display. This will not be just an ordinary tree, it will be something that has yet to be seen in this neighborhood, and will add that dramatic innovative effect that we always tr
y to achieve.

OK, not sure what has happened, but our web statistics are going through the roof! We had over 2,300 unique visits, with 4,122 page views in January 2010 alone, that’s darn close to our highest visit count in any one month since we went live back in 2005. February is also blazing with visitors, shoot, I might have to start providing add space on the site.
More Controllers: Light-O-Rama had their secrete sale on February 27th, Yes, we bought 2 more controllers, 1 - 16 Channel PC kit, and our first 16 channel DC controller. The PC kit will get us the channel count we need to be at if we get everything built for the 2010 season, and the DC controller will enable us to implement the new Rainbow Wall Wash and Blizzard elements to our display. We started on our first 7 foot tree build; lots of obstacles will have to be overcome to make this a working element for years to come, but we will get there.
The Controller Calculator has been rebuilt, we identified a few new bugs and have them worked out, and our big delay is the new user’s guide for the Controller Calculator. The user’s guide will be a comprehensive guide, currently 19 pages; the biggest obstacle is explaining the ideas and concepts that we originally designed the calculator for. We have done lots of research on this guide and it should be a great addition to the calculator. We are hoping to release it very soon.
Little League: Well we had our draft for the Major (12U) Dodgers, Paul and I entered thinking we would probably do pretty good having to only replace 5 players, however we did awesome! We thought we might get lucky and pick up two studs (top 90% players in draft) but we ended up with 5 top ranked players to add to our already powerful team of 6 very strong and competent 12 year olds. Our pitching rotation is solid at 7 pitchers. Like I said last month, this will be my final of 15 straight years in Little League Baseball; maybe I learned something after all! Winning isn’t everything! But it sure makes the game a lot more fun and whoever takes over our team next year will have 6 solid players to build from.
Nate has been asked to participate on the Ventura DRays, a Connie Mack league team. The Connie Mack league is an 18U high level, big exposure wood bat league played in the summer. The DRays carry a 30 man roster, and competition for a spot is fierce. I have coached several players’ from previous squads or had the opportunity to play against them in the past; these are really great ball players. It will be a pleasure to watch Nate play with real champions of this sport.

What a month! We received our 4 AC controller kits, all have been assembled, tested, and ready for enclosures. The new controllers will bring our controlled channel count to 128, enabling us to do quite a bit of new things with the display, which we will begin, building this month.
We are also testing a few new kits; the Blizzard and the Rainbow Runner. The Blizzard really excites me as it will add a feature rarely seen in personal displays. We are also looking at purchasing a new DC controller this year that will enable us several more possibilities with different products. DMX will probably not be in the mix until 2011, as this will a DMX controller as well as a host of other items.
We have finally started work on the Controller Calculator again, adding several new features, including calculations for DC, I know; A DC watt is the same as an AC watt, but I have had several folks ask for this feature and I decided I might as well include it also. We will be working on the 50 Controller calculator this month also (Imagine have 800 channels to sequence…..insane!) hopefully we can get version 3 uploaded for the extremists among us.
We have uploaded 10 sequences for download to the site, as well as our favorite Christmas Vacation sound bites; a must have for in-between songs. We will be uploading several more sequences trough out the year as we get them zipped and uploaded. I have also added several links to other sites of which the designers are also offering sequences for download.
We will be adding a few new pages to the web site to help organize things a bit. One new page will be for the many links to other displays, vendors, sequence sites, as well as other useful Christmas tech forums.
We will be starting work on our new display elements either this coming week or next; more than likely with the vertical corner stones, and leaping arches. Our corner stone’s will be one of two designs we have developed, we will make the prototypes first, try them out and go with the one with the most effects. We will document the progress of the corner stone lighting since we have several obstacles to overcome getting the implemented.
We bought 5 – 7 ½’ Christmas trees during the holidays, not sure how they will do, what we thought we bought is not what we actually bought; the trees we bought have individual removable branches, which may create an issue on pre-setup, since we wanted to semi-permanently attach the lights to the branches, so this will take some thought on the actual procedures we develop on the final assembly, if at all possible on these specific trees.
Nate was invited up to Cal State East Bay D2 (San Francisco/Oakland area) to try out for the college baseball team. He didn’t have a bad performance, but I know he is capable doing better. Last summer when he was a HS Junior I watched him dominate Westmont College roster from the mound, giving up 1 hit in 4 innings, he commanded the field so much, I thought Westmont just wasn’t capable of hitting the ball until they relieved Nate, Yes, they could hit the ball, 1st pitch from Nate’s reliever was out of the park, 2nd pitch to the next batter; again out of the park……pretty much the same results for the next four pitchers, they got lit up like they were part of our Christmas display.
Nate has been accepted to Cal State Northridge D1 (CSUN), and will be attending their 8 week training camp this summer, hoping to gain more interest in his abilities. All we have to do is keep him focused on the big picture and his choices that will make the rest of his life.
Little League Baseball has started up again for 2010, this will be Bubba’s last year of Little League Baseball, and will again play on the major dodgers (12U). This will also be my last year of Little League; I have spent the last 15 years as part of Little League either as a coach, manager, board member, or umpire. I have lots of memories in this organization and I have seen many of the kids I coached the fundamentals of baseball to play college ball, none pro yet, they are still too young, but I hope I made a positive impact in their lives.

Wow, it’s been awhile since I have written anything in this BLOG.
As many of you know we did not have the display this year. We had a stream of problems that made the display impossible to put up, at least to my standards, and I felt it best not to stress myself trying to get it working.
Thank you to everyone whom called, emailed, and stopped by inquiring about the display.
The big question! Yes, the display will return in 2010, and as I write this journal entry, we have already begun building on our 2010 display. All the equipment has been tested and the parts ordered to repair the failed controllers. We have ordered 4 new controllers that we will be building this month giving us a total of 112 controllable channels, of course this means that all the music will have to be reworked to accommodate for the new controller channels.
We have also purchased another 20,000 lights to go with what we purchased last year (20,000), along with 5- 7 ½ foot Christmas trees that will be a nice treat. Some of the other features that we will add are 20 more strobe lights, 4 leaping arches, illuminated corner stones, and retrofitting the C9 bulbs to LED lighting.

Pre-Setup

The season has come upon us once again! It’s hard to thinks it’s November already and it’s still in the high seventies…….Southern California’s a tough place to live!
As I said in an earlier blog, I am taking Mondays and Fridays off for the month of November for display setup. We received our two new controllers, I built one and Bubba built the other one, I messed mine up and had to order some replacement parts…….Thanks Dan from Light-O-Rama, as always they take care of their customers.
It have been tremendously busy the past 6 months, to be honest I have not worked on the new projects for this years display, so we may not have any new additions to the display, but as always I will see what I can do…..I always get things going and in place when needed. Worst case, we will have the same setup as last year, just with a lot more lights.
We start taking down all the supplies tomorrow, not sure were we are going to put them, but they are coming down, we hope to start hanging lights by Saturday and have the majority of lights in place by Monday night, giving me time to work on the new stuff.
We never really resolved the power relocation issue, maybe I can tackle that soon, otherwise I will have to put my controller worksheets to goods use on power management, after all that why I designed it.
We are hoping to be a Toys for Tots collection point again this year, the new coordinator has been quite elusive in meeting me or calling me back, I have been informed that I will have collection binds by the first of November, I hope so…I would hate to loose such a good opportunity to assist and help make the holidays better for others.

What a baseball season for my two younger boys; Nate and Chris.
The Quartz Hill High School Freshman team went 12-0 for regular season and 20-0 for the complete season, total domination. The Quartz Hill High School Freshman team went 12-0 for regular season and 20-0 for the complete season, total domination. Nate #33; pitched (up to 79 MPH (14 Years Old), played third base and caught for his team. He made his parents very proud of his accomplishments this year, although his grade point average could have been about .5 better and is capable of 1.0 better. He was selected as the MVP for his squad showing him that all the hustle, hard work and dedication will payoff in the long run.
The Quartz Hill Freshman team re-assembled two weeks after regular season to start American Legion Baseball season, they have faced several tough opponents from Varsity and Junior Varsity programs giving them the competition to help them improve as a team. Nate has been selected for the American Legion All-Star team and will get to play at Jet Hawk Stadium (Red Sox – Minor A) this Sunday, which will give himself and his parents another proud moment in his life. 
Nate, Great Job! You are making mom and dad very proud of you as you grow and learn to be an adult.

The Quartz Hill Minor Athletics team started great, turned cold, and came back fighting the best teams to finish the season landing us in 5th place. We had a great group of kids; some with real talent and that will grow and become great baseball players. Chris had a good season. I wish I could have worked with him a little more than I did this season.
Our order for more channels did get placed, we will be expanding our display by thirty two (32) more channels, of which 24 have been allocated for a new surprise build this coming season. Light-O-Rama came out with the DMX module this year, now I can really start planning some cool effects for future years (Snow, Fog, GOBOs).
The West Coast Christmas Bar-B-Q is scheduled for August 25th in Temecula, CA at LaFournaise home; I am looking forward to seeing everyone again. I have several projects that I worked on last year that I will be presenting and discussing.
Pismo Beach (Oceano Dunes) California is in our near future; our annual vacation to the beach is approaching fast. For those of you who do not know what Pismo is about; It one of the few beaches that allow vehicles drive on the beach as well as ORV’s, it’s great weather, fireworks, fun on the quads, camp fires, fishing, moon light strolls, kites, and breaking waves a full week of heaven.
I have schedule my time off this November for setup, I will try something new this year with Mondays and Fridays off, giving me several 4 day weekends to set things for the holidays, last year I spent more time lounging than I did setting up during my week off, so I thought I try a different approach, plus it will make the month fly by with only three day work weeks in November.

Have you ever wondered what you would do if a city took your civil liberty and religious rights away? I have actually considered the idea a few times and wondered how I would handle the issue, but never in my wildest imagination have I ever thought it could possibly happen to someone.
Below is a letter I wrote to another enthusiast whom has been discriminated and refused the right to free speech, religion and self expression. Dave is not a right-wing enthusiast displaying distasteful images, he is quite normal, no different than your or I, he is probably a better citizen of his community than most would ever consider, but his city administrators have made a personal battle to refuse him his religious and personal right to celebrate the birth of Christ in his own way, which is no different than Quartz Hill Christmas.
Dave has gone the extra mile to work with the city, but they will have no part of his synchronized display in the city limits, simply because they are too lazy to help with a little traffic.
Our letter to Dave:

Hi Dave,
I visited your web site (http://www.thecitythatstolechristmas.com) tonight and read every page (That says a lot for me to stay for more than a few minutes).
We feel for you and your endeavor, you seem to be a very patient person, willing to make things right at all costs. I believe you are correct in stating that someone has made this a personal thing rather than a ‘Better for the Public’ matter. I am applaud by your treatment from the cities “BULLY” tactics, it’s unfortunate that this ever happened. Christmas decorating is not a crime in America, if your lights attract more than others do, the city must address the issue of traffic in other ways other than shutting you down. The last time I checked, we have the right to expression, religion, and free speech; your lights are no different from your neighbors, folks just want to see yours and it is easier to address the issue with you rather than deal with the traffics themselves. If they shut you down then they must shut everyone down, it is discrimination and religious persecution for them to single you out rather than resolve the issue of traffic.
A few things to consider in your plight:
a) If the city chooses to set precedence, by citing their ordinance(s), then they MUST enforce it across the board without discrimination against ALL situations and ALL citizens within the city that fall under the same circumstance, if they choose to ignore others and situations alike; it is a simple case of prejudice and discrimination.
b) Possible options would be to petition the block to agree to your modified parking structure.
c) Add the contact names and addresses of the city officials that you have spoken with to your web site. So that others can write them directly informing them of their duty and obligations to your community, possibly when they receive letters from across the nation from families of other communities and cities they will finally figure out how big this has gotten and how bad it could turn out for them.
d) Remember and remind the city officials that this story is very news worthy for national television coverage, and it would be unfortunate to be known as ‘The City that Stole Christmas’, I’m sure your way ahead of me on this.
e) We stand by you! We have added your web address on our web site, and we will be discussing this at the Summer SoCal mini-PLUS and how we might support you and others faced with the same issues.

Spring has sprung, time has changed, and Baseball is in full swing for us.
We just returned from a week of Spring Training in Phoenix, Arizona, nothing but baseball, baseball and more baseball with perfect weather.
If you enjoy baseball in a minor field setting this is a definite trip to plan next March, the price is right for tickets ($4.00 to $20.00), a definite family event. We enjoyed several games from the Athletics, Mariners, Angles, White Sox, Royals, Padres and Rockies, visiting three fields at Phoenix, Peoria, and Tempe, the kids got a few balls and some autographs making their trip memorable as well.Nate made the freshman team this year, playing third, pitcher and catcher. The freshman team is a great group of 18 kids, quite dominating on the field and in the box, they have mercied (10 run gap after 5 innings)
all their opponents in pre-season, with two mercies to start their season. This will be a team to watch over the next few years, the varsity teams have taken the Golden League Championship for the last 5 years with their first CIF championship last year.Bubba and I are part of the minor Athletics at QHLL; Bubba had a slow start, and is developing well in the box, and on the mound. The A’s are not doing as well with just one win and several losses, but the boys are starting to perform as a team and giving the opponents a run for their money. Go A’s
The weather has been just outstanding for the past month, a few cold days with typical temperatures in the 70’s to 80’s. We did have a freeze spell that played havoc on out Palms and a few Junipers but overall the month has been fantastic.
Christmas CD’s still play daily in my truck, I am always orchestrating something new in my mind for next year. I have purchased quite a few tracks for Halloween, trying to figure out what we will do and how to get it done in such a way that I can reuse the lights for the next month (November) without having to redo everything.
The Christmas display plans are developing as we speak, we are shooting for a mega tree at 20’ with a minimum of 16 channels, hoping for 32. If all works out we will be adding another 48 channels this year (96 total), of course I still need to address the power issue since this will bring us to 12 – 20 Amp circuits or 240 available Amps for the display. My plan is to run the 12 circuits from the panel into a sub-panel in the garage by the controllers removing the need for the pricy 10/3 extension cords.
I have been working on the “Merry Christmas” sign ‘How-to’ hoping to have that completed soon and available for download.
I hope to be sequencing again soon, I had to rebuild the laptop and all my files have not been restored yet, thank goodness for CD burners.

The lights have finally come down, been pack away and have put away. I had to throw away quite a few older props and lights to make room for all the new stuff I bought this year.
Baseball has begun again for us, Nate made the high school freshman team, and Bubba moved up to the minor division of little league with me as a coach (I never learn) but it should be a very busy year until June with just baseball. In March, we have planned a trip to Phoenix for spring training, this has been a trip I wanted to do for several years, and I was able to plan far enough in advance that everyone’s schedule worked out.
We have been working on holding another mini-PLUS this year, trying to make it bigger and better than last year. One of the hardest pieces is getting a committee together to help make this happen, I guess not everyone is as committed to the hobby as we are, I will try to reach out to other enthusiasts in other states that have hosted an event in the past to see how they are recruiting assistants.
This year we are planning our ‘Synchronized Fright Lights’ for Halloween 2007, I have been working on a sign that will be sculpted from a dense foam (Same foam used in the MC sign last December, I have the talent to design and draw the sign, just hopping I have the talent to sculpt the sign. This year we will concentrate on music, ambiance, and yard props that I have been assembling over the years to help motivate me in future years as to what direction I want to go with this holiday.
Christmas 2006 is a memory now, I have started consideration planning for 2007, still not sure what we will add or change, I would like to add another 32 to 48 channels, but due to costs of the controllers I may have to reconsider and expand at a slower pace. Christmas 2006
What a year! The display has grown from 16 channels and 8 ,000 lights last year to 48 channels t0 13,000 lights today. We found several obstacles this year that delayed the final completion of the display and we have started planning for Christmas 2007 as we speak. We will expand by another controller, maybe two. We purchased another 10,000 lights during the sales this year.
Chris wants to build a Mega-Tree for next year, Laura wants the three pine trees illuminated.
Our Toy-for-Tots collection went well for our first year, although we forgot to count the toys we did have a chance to photograph the toys collected.
I would like to personally Thank all the families that supported the Toys for Tots this year, without your caring several children in the valley would not have had a Merry Christmas.
We collected two full bins of toys that where delivered to SSgt Telles on Friday December 22.
We plan on continuing to be a Toys for Tots collection location next year, hoping to be even more successful.
Again, a warm Thank You to everyone whom participated.
After Christmas Sales, I have waited for this day all year, I was not going to let this day pass without trying to get my share of sale items. I started at Lowes a week ago, they placed all holiday decorations on 50% off one week before Christmas. I was able to procure 3 bundles of garland, 5 metal flood light bases, 5-6" clear light balls, the only lights they had left on the shelf was clear. Well the day after Christmas, we pushed ourselves to get out of bed and headed out early to the super Wal-Mart, I was a little disappointed when we arrived, not much was left to pick over, I did get my hands on 2 multi nets, 2 red nets, 2 blue nets, 5 flood light bases, 4 icicles all for 50% off. Our next destination took us to Home Depot, they had lights but little decorations, we walk out with 24 Gold - 100ct strings and 24 Red strings at 75% off.....I should have bought more......Next I went to the other Home Depot which had absolutely nothing so we went to Wal-Mart in East Lancaster and found the mother load of lights. We walked out with 4 blue nets, 10 green candy canes, 20 green and 20 blue strings, several plug adapters, and a few other items.
Traffic this year again picked up Christmas week, exploding on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We placed our patio fire place and enjoyed the lights and company of others several nights this year. We had two nights of rain this season, one of them requiring us to shut down, while we enjoyed the lights Christmas Eve, Denver Colorado was under 4 feet of snow, Christmas in Southern California does have it's advantages.
Take down will begin after the first of the year, and the display will continue until New Years Eve nightly. We expect the take down to take approximately 4 days.

Show - Day 19
The display has been running for 19 days now. No problems have come up and traffic has been good although it is picking up as we get closer to Christmas.
The Toys for Tots bin has been out every night, we have had at least three families generously donate toys. I'm hoping this will continue through the season.
The web site is getting hits from visitors on average of 130 per night. Tonight we passed the 11,000 unique hit mark with about 80,000 page views.
We still continue to modify the display and sequences trying to make things a little better.
We have exceeded the 1 mile mark in extension cords.
Nightly, I am setting up things around 5:00 PM, if you are in the area and you would like to see how things operate, feel free to stop by and say hello.

Show - Day 9
The display has ran without any problems since Friday November 24th. We continually add to the display when time and temperatures permit. We had a cold spell hit us last week taking us into the teens, very cold in my opinion, so we did not do much to the display. Last Thursday things started to warm up for us while the rest of the nation went into the same deep freeze, several other lighting enthusiast were hit hard either by wind, snow or ice and lost several component to their display.
Traffic has picked up from one car every 1/2 hour to 2 or 3 cars at a time on Saturday night. Unfortunately the Tots for Tots is not going as well as expected, we have yet to collect a single toy, aside from what we have placed into the bin. I am hoping this changes as the traffic to the display changes.
We installed 10-100 light balls into the tree and built the wire harnesses to power them, hoping to have them illuminated tonight. We installed the Candy Canes (18), they are not wired yet, not sure how we are going to set them up, Laura wants them all to be individually controlled but that will take another 1800 feet of SP2 wire. We have the channels available just not the wire.
We are still re-Sequencing last years music, still have several to complete.

Show - Day 3
Really quiet today, I did get to sleep in until 9:30 AM. We did not get much done at all today, I re-sequenced 3 of the 4 songs I planned on redoing, better some then none. Re-sequencing the music is taking almost as much time to complete as it did to create the original sequence.
Chris and I watched the show from the truck again tonight, we went out about 8:00 PM, hoping to catch the end of the schedule, we missed it, the show already restarted. I did get a good look at the re-sequenced songs, they look really good.
A friend of the family stopped by to watch the show, they said they read an article in the paper regarding us............That's funny, I know we sent out press releases to the papers, I guess they didn't want to talk to us this year, or just published from the press release.........I must be getting good at this or they are hiring graduates from Ohio State. I will have to go by and see if I can pick up a few copies.
Back to work on Monday, have a few projects their that need attention, this should help make the week go by fairly quickly.
We will try to install the 6" light balls in the trees on Monday and get them assigned to channels.

Show - Day 2
The Sign is complete!
We finished the Merry Christmas sign today, Finally! I have worked on this project daily since the end of September, the letters are works of art, I just hope they last! The should with 3 coats of resin, 7 coats of paint and 7 coats of clear coat, I don't think I have much to worry about. I will be posting a step by step how for this project on QuartHillChristmas.com shortly, if your interested.

Today Chris and I sat in the truck across the street watching the show for at least one and one half hours, I am always critiquing my own work, I must change this about that sequence. Some day I will finish.....At this rate, I don't think so!
No collections for Toys for Tots today, still not expecting much yet, hopefully this will chance soon.
Completed 2 more songs of re-sequencing, this is taking more time that I planned. I have copied all my music and sequences to another computer, so I can continue to work while the show is playing, otherwise I might have to relax for a few hours......I haven't done that for two months now, why start now. I will try to have four more done tomorrow.
Our web site stats are still climbing, last January when we launched the site, we received 1079 unique visitors, as of today we have had 2304 unique visitors for the month of November.
Tomorrow we will also be trying to install the snow balls in the trees and setting out the candy cane and hooking them up, I have a few other strings to install at other locations and then I think I will call it quits for this year or at least until the first of the year!

Show - Day 1
Today was the official opening of the display.
We did not work on the display much today, we were up very early (Black Friday) and at the stores by 7:00 AM, we did get everything we wanted, I would list here but the kids may actually read this.......Sorry Nate! Dad isn't that old. I did however find several new 6" light balls at Walgreens and snow flakes at Lowes, another 1000 bulbs to add to our count (13,000 +). Picked up the molding for the Merry Christmas sign, I hope we can get the final details completed on this project on Saturday.
Toys for Tots did not collect anything, not that I expected anything so early in the display, we did pick up another three toys for the bins in our travels today.

Setup - Day 18
The unofficial opening of the show ran tonight from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
It was a tight schedule we managed to get things running, it was a bit cold but we sat through the whole show. I still have quite a bit of work to do on last years sequences, updating them to 48 channels will take some time, glad this is a long weekend.
Last night I was able to get another sequence completed (A Mad Russian Christmas by TSO). This sequence utilizes 32 channels of the display and is nothing short of incredible.
Today we had to restructure all our voice-overs and wav files (Christmas Vacation sound bites) to include a channel that will be able to control the static display. Last year the static display was always-on, so we decided that it would be better to have this part of the display fade off during the the musical sequence and on during the non-musical parts of the show.
We placed the display signs out today and kicked up the FM transmitter, we checked the site statistics and did notice a influx of traffic to the site. It will be interesting to see how the visitor counts add up this month.

The unofficial opening of the show ran tonight from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
It was a tight schedule we managed to get things running, it was a bit cold but we sat through the whole show. I still have quite a bit of work to do on last years sequences, updating them to 48 channels will take some time, glad this is a long weekend.
Last night I was able to get another sequence completed (A Mad Russian Christmas by TSO). This sequence utilizes 32 channels of the display and is nothing short of incredible.
Today we had to restructure all our voice-overs and wav files (Christmas Vacation sound bites) to include a channel that will be able to control the static display. Last year the static display was always-on, so we decided that it would be better to have this part of the display fade off during the the musical sequence and on during the non-musical parts of the show.
We placed the display signs out today and kicked up the FM transmitter, we checked the site statistics and did notice a influx of traffic to the site. It will be interesting to see how the visitor counts add up this month.

Setup - Day 17
I'm getting tired, soon I can rest.
Today we finished the wiring the bushes and the static part of the display. We ran a few test just to make sure everything worked, no glitches. We had to make several custom SP2 cords, glad I had another 250' of wire. 40 bushes wired for lights independently, it's a really cool sight to see.
I wanted to count the footage of all the cord we have placed into the display, but I forgot to keep track......darn it, now I have to go through the yard and estimate or wait until the first of the year when we take things down again.
Worked on the backboard for the Merry Christmas sign, I think we have a winner. Cut the board and primed. Ran a few test colors Green vs. White, we are going with the white background with forest green trim. The MERRY part will be on an arc while the CHRISTMAS will remain straight.......That's the thought, nothing is final until it's done. I took more pictures tonight but somehow the camera is not recording to the memory stick, I'm sure my three sons would have nothing to do with this...........
We received a call from Channel 3 news, our local cable new station, I'm guessing someone forwarded the press release to them, he had quite a bit of information regarding the display that we discussed. They would like to do a weather report from our front yard in the next week. I wonder if I can hire one of the camera men to come back and tape the display.
We have also received inquiries from producers for shows on TLC and HGTV, unable to make their cut, either their schedule or mine would prevent the taping, maybe next year.
I think Chris is plum tuckered out with working on the display, he wants too, but I thinks he wants to go off and play, I guess enough is enough for him.
tomorrow, we will install the Candy Canes, work on the back board and try t install the final lights, I'm hoping to get another sequence done also.

Setup - Day 16
Sick day today, not much got accomplished in the yard. I was able to get some rest and tweak some sequences. We sent out the press release to the Antelope Valley Press and the Daily News last Sunday, informing them of the display, our cause, and the hours.We where able to run a few tests tonight again, everything ran perfect. We have several new songs this year, I am very please with them, they will be a nice addition to the show.
Our web site www.QuartzHillChristmas.com surpassed Octobers visitor 1699 count today, pushing us to 1783 at the days end for the month of November. Currently our visitor count since last January 2006 is 8,132 unique visitors, our hits are well over 250,000.
Here is an interesting fact: Did you know that their is a Quartz Hill in New Zealand? I get several hits per month from New Zealand, I thought I would check why, what is happening when someone in New Zealand googles Quartz Hill, guess who comes up in the search?
Currently the site is visited from around the world, countries like: Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, Ireland, Chile, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Japan, Austria, Philippines, India, and Macau.
The display is ready but not complete, I have several items to complete that will be added daily until done.

Setup - Day 15
Monday, November 20, 2006 - Amazing how the year has flown by, like the miles on my truck! Things are really getting exciting now, the neighbors are getting a taste of the show as we test, many have stopped and said how much they enjoyed it last year and pry for any new changes this year........I'm not telling, they just have to wait and see or read the previous days of this BLOG.

Today, we where able to get all the flood lights wired and tagged, it's funny how many lights I walked by with out plugging them in, I didn't notice until we ran tests on the lights again, maybe I have to many lights.......NO!, I really don't think so.
We tested the wireless speakers, great buy from E-Bay last year, we use them in the summer around the pool and in winter for the display. They worked as they should, I just have to be really careful on the volume, these speakers can wake the goblin's from last Halloween!
We ran about 30 minutes of the show, 5 minutes to test, and 20 minutes for Chris and I to praise each others hard work. I get such a kick out of this, the pinnacle of my year is about to arrive.
